One Thing Can Alter Everything

" Because he lacked a good map, the cable spanning the river also remained incognito. Studying the Teklanika's violent flow, McCandless thus mistakenly concluded that it was impossible to reach the eastern shore" (Krakauer 174).

Topic: Inspiration or Fool?

Chris McCandless had gotten rid of anything that told him the time and date or where he was. Therefore, he never thought of taking a map alongside him into the wild. However, the consequences revealed themselves when Chris attempted to rejoin civilization. The Teklanika river was impossible to cross, according to McCandless, and the decision to return back to his camp was the decision that determined his life. If only he had brought a map, he would've noticed the station that stood alongside the river, and he could've crossed the river if he had known its existence. Chris McCandless made such a foolish choice to enter the wild unprepared. Even though he thought getting rid of any communication or navigation materials would free him from society, these items are top priority when traveling in the wilderness. To have not brought along the most important items in a wilderness adventure, he suffered the terrible consequences. There was no inspirational act in this wilderness expedition, it was entirely foolish and wrong. If only he hadn't been as stubborn as he was and had brought a map, he would've still been alive today.

Do you Like Being Bossed Around by your Parents?

""Chris just didn't like being told what to do. I think he would have been unhappy with any parents; he had trouble with the whole idea of parents""(Krakauer 115)

Topic: The Dynamics of Family

In this quote, one of Chris' male friends was asked about what he thought of Chris' family. Chris hadn't really expressed anything at all of his family to his friends, but they had a general idea of their own. Chris was a rebellious and heavily independent person, who despised getting orders from someone else. He liked to do things himself and in his own way. ""Chris had so much natural talent," Walt continues, "but if you tried to coach him, to polish his skill, to bring out that final ten percent, a wall went up"" (Krakauer 11), like in this quote, Chris' father even agreed on how Chris detested the idea of being helped or being told on how to do something. So parents in general, are protective and caring figures. A parent's job is to take care of their child, teaching them the ways of life. Such as: how to act around others, how to have polite manners, and how to do certain things. This comes back to the quote, because parents are people who are literally telling you what you can and can't do and what you should and shouldn't do in your life. This was clearly something that went against Chris' thoughts, so it is agreeable that Chris wouldn't like the idea of parents at all. This can really make you wonder what kind of parent he would've been if he were to be one at all.

Road to True Happiness?

" So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future" (Krakauer 56-57).

Topic: Inspiration or Fool?

This sentence was in a letter that McCandless had written to Franz, a man who had cared much dearly about the young man. McCandless was trying to get the man to realize the true meaning of life and happiness, and that all it depended on was himself. The quote clearly explains how there are many people in society who are living boring and unhappy lives, but despite this they don't ever try to change it. They tend to not change it because the way they are living their lives is simple and so secure that they don't have to feel the pains of failure and have a life of uncertainty, where the future is unknown. But what they may not realize is that the damage of being unhappy is greater than they think it is. Franz was living a closed, boring life. He was clearly unhappy with himself and his lifestyle, but made no attempts whatsoever to change it. If it hadn't been for Alex, the man would've never truly moved on and escape the negativity his unhappiness spread. A statement telling you to change your life in a way to be happier is not in any way foolish, but more helpful like advice. So in the end, it was an inspiration to not only Franz, but perhaps the reader themselves as well.
